The Prisoner is Coming

created on Sep-11-2009

AMC’s The Prisoner, which was shot in Namibia and Cape Town, is coming in November.
I found this Comic-Con preview on YouTube.
I don’t know about you, but I’m excited:

The Beardless Wonder

2009 started wonderfully with this commercial for Fryst Frozen Foods.
It was a ridiculously fun day out in the Cape Town summer.
I play a small-town tv-reporter covering the Rivertown County Fair and annual macaroni & cheese contest.

Awesome crew, awesome cast, awesome day.
The Director pretty much gave me free reign with the character and allowed me to improvise quite a lot of the scene.
It sounds silly talking about a commercial like it was an award winning performance, but so often when you shoot a commercial it’s all about hitting your mark and holding the product up correctly that it is always a pleasure when they let you actually throw in some performance and create a character.

Here’s a new ad I shot in November last year.

I play the security guard at the beginning, and although it’s a small part of the whole, the shoot was a tremendous amount fun.
It’s an incredibly stunt-heavy commercial and it was a ton of fun hanging out with the stunties and the precision driver Danie Malan, who very kindly didn’t run me over take after take.

Danie Ramps Off Artscape Steps

It took 3 nights to shoot and even though I was wrapped by about 2am on the third night I stuck around until around 4 to watch Danie drive that Renault 5 down the steps outside the Artscape (incidentally those steps are where I shot Elmo Gonif’s empassioned megaphone speech in ST3: Marauder).

What was also a thrill was to have my good friend and ex-DOP, Digby Young come and visit me on set. While I sat around waiting for the photo-shoot on the last night, he gave me a concise, but complete history of film cameras. Starting with black/white cameras, all the way through tricolour, 3D, Imax to HD. If you’re not a cinephile that may sound a little boring, but I assure you it was riveting conversation.
The evening finished with Digs and I having coffee at around 8am before finally heading home to sleep.
